House of Mystery Books
House of Mystery Books is a T'karonto based Small Press. Founded in 2020.
On the Northern Shores of Lake Ontario, these are the ancestral lands of the Mississauga of the Credit, the Haudenosaunee, the Petun First Nations, the Huron Wendat, the Anishnabeg and the Chippewa. These lands continue to be home to many indigenous peoples. A Meeting Place, of peoples from all over the world. Part of Treaty 13, may my honour be to deepen my relationship in a good way to these lands. Home to the White Pine, Blood Root, Boneset. To the High Bush Cranberry, The Elderberry and to the Goldenrod & Aster. The House of Mystery is continuously inspired by these lands as a way to understand how to make a home for Life.
While studying English Literature at Dalhousie University, Elisirene Ship wandered the many hallways and particularly the basement of Dark Dalhousie University's Library. It was there there, 18 year old Elisirene stumbled upon a series of rooms filled to the brim with letterpress. This basement depot was where all the maritime presses, having become obsolete tech, had gone and found themselves a place to retire. Relics for the most part in good working order as they were cared for by an able steward, who had studied the long way of becoming a printer and bookbinder, doing all his studies and journeyman-ship in England. He told me once he had restored a book purported to have been bound in human flesh. These lte teenaged eyes lit Starry Bright into one of Eliserene’s true hearts desires. Her love of textured print and type fonts was secured. And immediately she signed up for the letterpress open studio and the bookbinding classes that were being offered.
This was one of her prints of the time:
She went on to get her BFA in Printmaking at OCAD University in Toronto, splitting her time between making books, and the desire to make those books into real life, through a kind of living theatre. Seasonal Mystery Plays.
Fast forward. to the summer of June 2020, after exploring many different avenues of expression, Eliserene returned to her love of stories, beauty and the printed word, and launched House of Mystery.
